There are many issues facing the LGBT Community. Some of these are HIV stigmatisation, lack of resources, Bullying, and exclusion from school curricula. We will discuss some of the main problems faced by the LGBT Community. But what are these issues? Let’s begin by identifying some of the most pressing ones. First, we will look at mental illness. Mental illness is an extremely widespread problem and it slows down the working process of the LGBT Community.
HIV stigmatisation
As of 2011, there were 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S. Only 30% of those people were taking their medication consistently. Having an undetectable form of the virus is beneficial for a person’s health and makes it impossible to pass it on to a partner. Fortunately, there are several prevention and treatment options available to couples with undetectable partners. Unfortunately, many prevention and treatment programs are underfunded and hindered by ideological barriers.
One study found that a high percentage of LGBT people living with HIV are isolated from their communities. This may be because of internal and external stigma. Those living with HIV report experiencing internalized homophobia twice as often as HIV-negative men. In addition to external stigma, LGBT people with HIV often face discrimination and rejection in their daily lives. To understand the causes and effects of these problems, it’s important to understand why LGBT people are suffering.
Lack of resources
A growing number of surveys document the harmful effects of discrimination against the LGBT Community. Among other problems, LGBT people are denied equal employment opportunities, are discriminated against in public schools, and face a host of other challenges. These experiences have significant economic costs, including reduced productivity, underinvestment in human capital, and lost labor time. Further, these negative economic effects can negatively affect macroeconomic growth. This study outlines the costs and benefits of increasing LGBT inclusion in the workplace.
HIV is one of the largest challenges facing the LGBT Community. The lack of resources and the discrimination faced by LGBT people in health care can lead to poor health outcomes. As a result, young LGBT individuals may not be able to fully share their sexual orientation with their clinicians, which can cause a number of problems such as a poor therapeutic alliance and inadequate illness-related education. Lack of resources for screening for communicable diseases and effective interventions to prevent STDs are just some of the problems that affect the LGBT community.
Bullying
Research has shown that students from the LGBT community are at higher risk for depression and anxiety than their heterosexual peers. There is also an increased incidence of HIV among LGBTQ youth, and studies show that these factors contribute to poor health outcomes. A recent national survey found that severe bullying had negative long-term consequences, including one-sixth of respondents dropping out of school, half of whom experienced homelessness, and a rate of HIV infection eight times higher than in the general population.
The effects of bullying on LGBTQ youth are severe. In addition to affecting their quality of life, it increases their risk of suicide. Creating an environment free of bullying and enabling LGBTQ youth to express themselves openly in school is essential to ensure the wellbeing of LGBTQ youth and their families. Fortunately, many schools are embracing their LGBT students and implementing policies and programs that make the environment a safe place for all.
Exclusion from school curricula
While some countries are taking steps to address the issue, others have chosen to avoid it altogether and continue to exclude LGBT students from the classroom. For governments striving to achieve equity in education, protecting the rights of LGBT students and improving school-based bullying monitoring are essential steps. This legislation would make these goals a reality for Illinois students. However, it will still take a great deal of work. This bill would benefit both educators and students.
One step to ensuring an inclusive school environment is to create a model curriculum for the LGBT community. While inclusive elementary school curricula are more general and do not explicitly address sexual orientation, a middle or high school curriculum may focus on relationships and the history of LGBTQ rights. Teachers can find a range of resources from the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, which also offers lessons for elementary, middle, and high school students.
Transgender deterrence
While transgender people are not criminals, the environment in which they live and work is a threatening place to be for them. Many are subjected to physical abuse, sexual assault, and discrimination on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to change anytime soon. The Trump administration has taken steps to address some of these issues. The following are just a few.
Many LGBTQ youth are forced into criminal behavior. Many of these crimes are related to homelessness, such as drug selling or theft. Some even resort to “survival sex.”
